Fundamentals of Geographic Information Systems (GIS) – Part I

Geographic Information Systems (GIS) is currently an everyday technology used in private and public sectors as well as in education and research. Skills in GIS and an understanding on this technology is currently highly valuable and several employers need GIS-skilled workers. With this course, you get started with GIS and get a fundamental understanding and skills that ease your further progress in becoming a GIS expert.

The course introduces Geographical Information Systems (GIS). Students learn basic concepts and theories for geographic information science and get hands-on experiences in use of GIS software.
The course cover topics like how GIS represents the environment, georeferencing, characteristics with geographical data and where these are found from national spatial data infrastructures, map design, as well as basic GIS tools such as queries, distance and area measures, buffer, and overlay.
